Reflective Essay: I did 20 hours of community service for an English semester project. I worked at a church, worked for the school band competition, and I worked for an organization that helped families get clothes and shoes. I didn't like the idea that I had to go out and work for free while I still had work myself, family, and school. It's not that hard though, all you need is 20 hours out of a semester of time to do it. That's plenty of time to get it done. So i got started on community service and the first place I went to was a church. I went to the First Southern Baptist Church on Orangethorpe and Western. I didn't do much but helped out in the kitchen and we ended up watching a movie when we were done. I got five hours done that day. All churches need help, no matter what it is, they'll find something for you to do. It's always nice to help out at a church because it feels good to help your community and others. I also did community service at the band tournament. I was there for about four hours. I got to see a wide variety of school bands, as well as ours. Our band did well, I think it was one of the best. While the schools were preforming, I was walking around trying to sell flowers. I was assigned to a table where we had to make flower bouquet and I had to walk around and get people to buy them. I got a free meal for the day and i met new people. I had loads of fun hanging out with the other flower girl and doing our job. I realized that it takes a lot of people to help out at games and tournaments. They'll take all the help they can get. I also went to the mall and did community service. It was a foundation that gave a family in need a new pair of shoes, 100$ shopping spree at Sears, and a picture with Santa. I was assigned a little girl in 5th grade and her mom. My job was to make sure they went through everything and got what they needed. I took them to see Santa and to Payless to pick out a pair of shoes. I also took them to Sears and made sure what they got was in the 100$ limit and was school appropriate. I had free coffee and I got to bond with them. We talked, socialized, joked around and had fun. I'm glad I got a little girl because I got to help her pick out clothes and shoes. My two favorite things to do as a girl. Everything went smoothly and i learned that no matter who it is, people need help. I really enjoyed helping them out with what they needed. They even offered me a ride home! I didn't need it though but I very much appreciated it. All of that took me four hours to do. I also went to three different parks to clean up. I helped my community by making the park look good and cleaning it up. We raked leaves, picked up trash, moved anything that didn't belong, and other stuff. It feels good to clean up the Earth and make nature look good by cleaning up the human parts. Wouldn't you like to take your kids to a nice, clean park? Well now you can as long as people continue to help out and clean up parks. It feels good helping out your community. Just knowing that at the end your helped someone and made things better for them. At first I really didn't want to do any of it but once I did a little bit, then i realized it's not that bad. You can take some time out of your life to help someone else who could really use it. I learned that there's others out there that need help to and not just yourself. You need to go out and help your community just to know that your a part of it. Community service isn't even that hard there's easy things to do out there. We're all humans and we all need help, so doesn't it work out if you help each other? Yes, yes it does so go out there and help your community! Just me it will make you feel better about yourself and it'll make others feel better too.
